A: Usually we call everything an outlet. But technically, an outlet is just the hole in the wall where electricity comes out. The receptacle is the thing you plug into.

A: Most outlets have two straight slots — that’s 15A. One of them shaped like a sideways T? Then it’s 20A. That T-slot means it can handle more power. Garage outlets are usually 20A.

A: In anyplace where water can be an issue. Bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outside walls — all wet areas. Old houses might still have plain outlets there. That’s one of the first things electricians replace during updates. It’s very important to prevent shocks.

A: GFCI protects against electric shock by shutting off power when it detects a current imbalance, especially in wet areas. AFCI focuses on fire prevention and trips when it detects dangerous arcing in the wiring. They serve different purposes, which is why both are used in modern homes.

A: TR means tamper-resistant. There are little shutters inside that only open when both prongs go in. Basically, it’s all about safety for kids, but also standard now in living rooms, bedrooms — anywhere people live. You don’t see it working unless you try to stick a pencil in there (obviously not recommended).

A: WR means weather-resistant. It won’t make the outlet waterproof, but it can survive rain, sun, humidity, temperature swings. Outdoors, it’s basically mandatory — anything else would fail fast.
